Constitution Day
September 17 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
The national observance of Constitution Day, held each year on September 17, commemorates the day in 1787 that the document was signed by delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia.
American Baptist College will host a special activity during the Tuesday, September 17, chapel service to commemorate Constitution Day. The discussion will highlight the importance of the Constitution to our everyday freedoms, and the added significance during this critical election season. The College’s history in the fight for social justice will also be spotlighted during the event.
The facilitator, Nashville native Ashley Upkins, is the president-elect of the National Bar Association, the nation’s largest and oldest organization representing Black lawyers, judges, law professors, and students. Upkins will begin her term as president in 2025, during the association’s centennial year.
When sworn in, she will become the first woman from Tennessee to lead the organization in its 100-year history.
Panelists will include representatives from various legal-focused organizations, such as the ACLU, the Equity Alliance, and the League of Women Voters. Organizations scheduled to attend include Black Voters Matter, NOAH, the Nashville and Tennessee Bar Associations, and, of course, students and alumni from American Baptist College.
ABC’s Constitution Day event is free and open to the public and will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Room of the Susie McClure Library.
